The short film Born With It shows how stereotypes can shape the way people see others and even how individuals see themselves. Reflect on the main character’s experience and explain how stereotypes impacted his identity and sense of belonging. Then, connect this to a broader idea: how can stereotypes influence the way a culture or group is understood by others? Use specific examples from the film to support your response.
Prompt Response: Stereotypes impacted his identity and sense of belonging by making him feel alone/isolated from others and feel disgusted by himself for simply existing, he saw himself as something bad instead of something good for his color and the way he looked. Stereotypes can influence the way a culture or group is understood by others in a bad way and a narrow minded perspective on the individual or group overall, this is backed up by the film when the Japanese kids saw on how the child looked and thought he had a disease known as "AIDS". Another example is from when all the kids don't want to play with him singling him out as not 'one of them'.
Summary: Today in class we watched a short film on stereotypes on an African Japanese kid and how he gets treated by society.
Reflection: Today I learned that stereotypes can be correlated with diseases just based on color. This impacted me by making me feel quite shocked that people can get treated in such a way and prejudicial on the color of your skin. In the future I will use this by taking this into account when I do my presentation on Rural White Americans.
