Think about a moment when you challenged your parent(s)’ rules or expectations. How did you feel, and what was the outcome?
Prompt Response: I felt like I was filled with shame that I did so because later on in my life I realized that they were actually right. But in the moment I felt pretty frustrated and angry with the way that my mom used to always compare me with other people whether it be people in the same age group as me or younger. The outcome was that I eventually became lazy and just stopped trying not because I felt like it, but because all hope I had was lost; At some point I wondered why bother to even try at all? So I stopped and gave up on my own life when I was younger.
Summary: Today in class we read over the short story "Two Kinds" by Amy Tan and discussed the elements of the short story to her cultural identity. Afterwards our teacher showed us the assignment that we were going to work on Friday.
Reflection: Today I learned that a parents expectations have an influence on your cultural identity as well rather than your traditional values that you may have. This impacted me by making me reflect on times where my own parents expectations weighed in me and it made me realize how far I've come from who I was before each and every year. In the future I will use this for a reference when trying to get to know a person before judging them just on how they present themselves or how they behave when their with other people.
