How does Rose’s role as a wife and mother reflect societal expectations of women, particularly African American women, in the 1950s, and how does her sense of duty impact her relationship with Troy?
Prompt Response: Rose's role as a wife and mother reflect societal expectations, particularly African American in the 1950's by showing the expectations of her just being at home instead of making money and doing the chores around the house such as the hanging of the clothes outside in the sun to dry; As well as her role as an African American being less than those that are White in color such as being treated worse or the expectations are higher in a negative light. (I can't provide insight or evidence as I had just participated or got back into class today). Her sense of duty affects her relationship with Troy by making her feel bad about herself whenever she makes her husband Troy unhappy or mad despite the way he is, as her expectations of a wife weigh on her most likely everyday of not doing enough.
Summary: Today we read over Fences Act 1, Scene 2; It was mainly about how Gabriel was injured and is now mentally challenged while at the beginning of the Act we see that his wife went to gamble some money, after that Troy later talks with Gabriel and later secretly talks with Rose his wife one on one of using the money for Gabriel's disability to pay the rent showing that he lives pay check to pay check.
Reflection: Today I learned that even back then people of a different skin color (specifically people who were once known as slaves) could blend into society by contributing to the nation also affecting their culture by assimilating into another one. This impacted me by making me feel ambiguous towards the idea that black people or ninjas back then could live a somewhat normal life although it was much harder for them as racism still existed despite the opportunity that was given to them over time. In the future I will use this for referencing the term Assimilation and using this example/prompt to remind me what the term means.
