Write about an experience when someone assumed something about you because of a stereotype. What was the situation, and what did you do?
Prompt Response: People always assumed that I was smart either because of the fact that I was Asian or Indian, which isn't true. I find it offensive in a way because not every Indian is smart, there are obviously different individuals who have to work towards their results one way or another, like me. I could never get good at something until I started at it or kept on trying until I finally got it, I was a dullard in a way when it came to my own academics, which is why this year I'm trying to make it up this year by developing a work ethic each day. Anyways when people call me "smart" I just either ignore them or tell myself my pessimistic view point that I wasn't naturally gifted like that. If anything I've seen geniuses out there that can do it at a much faster time than me with a shorter work ethic which is rather disheartening.
Summary: Today in class we first listened to one of the career advisors after high school on one of her presentations that explained what her role was and what she would do. After that we finished up presentations, then we focused on different stereotypes and how they could affect others'cultural identity.
Reflection: Today I learned in class that there was actually a neutral stereotype, considering usually my perspective of what stereotype was always in a negative spotlight. This impacted me by trying to think of ideas that are "neutral" in terms of stereotypes for each race, for example "Asian Americans have small eyes". In the future I will use this for future arguments that may involve certain stereotypes and explain why not all ideas about a certain race are bad nor good.
